PennHIP
PennHIP - We are Accredited
We are trained and certified to perform this advanced hip screening for dogs.
PennHIP (the University of Pennsylvania Hip Improvement Program) is a scientifically validated method for assessing hip laxity, or looseness in the hip joint, which is the main risk factor for developing hip dysplasia and osteoarthritis.
Unlike traditional hip scoring, PennHIP can be performed on puppies from as young as 16 weeks of age, giving owners and breeders valuable information early.
The procedure is done under sedation and involves three specialised x-ray views of the hips. These images are sent for independent analysis, and each dog receives a distraction index (DI) score that's ranked against other dogs of the same breed.
This makes PennHIP a valuable tool for breeders selecting dogs for breeding programs, as well as for owners of working, sporting, or large-breed dogs who want to plan ahead for their pet's long-term joint health.
